Multi-osc, detune, unison

A choir of one person versus a choir of twenty — same melody, very different sound.
▸What it is
Stacking two or more oscillators on the same note and shifting them slightly out of tune creates a thicker, wider sound than any single oscillator can produce. Tiny pitch differences between oscillators cause slow beating between their waveforms — the chorus-like motion that turns a thin saw into a supersaw or a hollow square into a wide pad. Unison takes this further: multiple voices per note, spread across the stereo field, each detuned a little. The more voices and the wider the detune, the bigger and more diffuse the result — at the cost of pitch focus. Pull detune all the way down and the oscillators lock back into a single tone.

How much detune is too much?
5–15 cents is musical and tight; 20–40 cents is wide and dramatic; past that the pitch starts to feel uncertain. Pads tolerate more detune than basses.

Why do detuned saws sound so big?
The frequency content of multiple saws beats against itself across the whole harmonic range, not just the fundamental — that is perceived as fullness and width.

Does unison work for bass?
Yes, but keep it narrow. Wide unison bass loses focus and clashes with the kick. Two voices, slight detune, mostly mono is the sweet spot.
