Saturation / gain staging

Pushing a vintage amplifier past the point where the speaker behaves politely.
▸What it is
Drive pushes the signal harder than the next stage cleanly handles, and the resulting clipping or saturation generates new harmonics — making the sound thicker, dirtier, or outright distorted. A small amount adds warmth and presence; a lot turns a clean bass into a reese or a guitar-like growl. Position matters too: drive before the filter and the filter shapes the distortion harmonics; drive after the filter and the distortion sits over whatever the filter already did. Drive interacts with everything else — turn it up and the apparent loudness, brightness, and bass weight all change.

Pre-filter vs post-filter drive — when does it matter?
Pre-filter drive is what most analog synths do: the filter then sculpts the resulting harmonics, which is musical and forgiving. Post-filter drive is more aggressive — distortion on top of an already-shaped signal.

How is drive different from compression?
Both can make a sound feel louder, but drive adds harmonic content (new frequencies); compression just changes the dynamic range.

Why does my bass disappear in the mix when I add drive?
Drive often boosts mid frequencies and can mask the fundamental. Pair it with a touch of EQ or a low-pass filter to keep the low end intact.
